CHARLES W. ROBBINS

CHARLES W. ROBBINS (A biographical sketch abstracted from An Illustrated History of the State of Washington, compiled by Rev. Harvey Kimball Hines and published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1893) Re: The Nicholas Robbins Family, No. 7.40.3

Charles W. Robbins, presently a hotel proprietor residing at Medical Lake, Spokane County, Washington, was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1834, the son of James and Susan (Crosby) Robbins. The father was a mechanic by profession. Charles W., the third of nine children, was raised in Washington County, Maine, where his family settled shortly after his birth. Following completion of his education, he was engaged in the logging trade for a number of years.

In August, 1862, Mr. Robbins enlisted in the 18th Maine Infantry and was first stationed in and around

Washington, the District of Columbia, in defense of the Capitol. In 1863 he went to the front where he joined the 5th Army Corps under Hancock and was wounded at the Battle of Spottsylvania, Virginia on May 19, 1863. Following care and recovery at Lincoln Hospital in Washington, he was honorably discharged in 1865.

After the close of the struggle, Mr. Robbins settled in Eddington Bend, Maine. In 1875 he creased the plains to California, where he resumed lumbering for a few years prior to taking up residence in Medical Lake in 1879. He erected the hotel of which he is still the proprietor and also owns other valuable property in the city. Mr. Robbins held the office of Councilman of Medical Lake for one term and is a Republican in his political views. He is member of the Masonic Order, the Odd Fellows and the G. A. R.

Mr. Robbins was married at an early age to Miss Anna Gilsby, a native of Aurora, Maine. They had two children, both now deceased. Mr. Robbins has done a great deal to further the interests of Medical Lake, is one of its most enterprising citizens and is highly esteemed by his fellow townsmen.
